In a world that often rewards hardness, speed, and emotional distance, the word “sensitive’ is seen as a problem to be fixed. But what if sensitivity isn’t something to eliminate—but something God invites us all to experience, grow in, and steward wisely? This week, we begin a new series based on Pastor Jason’s new book, The Highly Sensitive Christian. We’ll be exploring how our awareness, emotions, and empathy may actually reveal something beautiful about being human. And we’ll discover how Jesus modeled a kind of strength that was both deeply compassionate and deeply resilient.
Discussion Guide

Before we begin, let’s take a quiet moment to pray for God’s direction for our time together. Then we’ll take a couple of minutes to go around and share where we’ve seen God at work in our lives this week. Specifically, how were you able to apply the action steps from our last time together? To remind you, they were: 1. Commit to a new step of regular internal spiritual practices. 2. Prayerfully take a love-fueled step of mercy for a loved one this week.
Introduction
Have you ever felt like you, or someone you know, is too sensitive? Many of us have been told—directly or indirectly—to toughen up, tone it down, or get thicker skin. But what if sensitivity isn’t a flaw, but a gift from God?
The Bible shows us that God intentionally creates people with deep awareness, empathy, and responsiveness. And because we experience the world through our bodies, learning to recognize and care for our sensitivity is an important part of following Jesus.
This week, we begin by seeing sensitivity as something God designed on purpose. It’s a gift to celebrate, nurture, and use to make a difference in the lives of others, rather than something to fix.
Connect
Let’s start our discussion time with some “get-to-know-you” questions.
- What’s a sound, smell, and sight you really enjoy?
- What’s something you tend to notice that other people sometimes miss?
- What do you like to do to relax or calm yourself
Opening
Our culture often rewards toughness and independence. But the Bible gives us a different picture where tenderness, awareness, and compassion are strengths from God. In this beautiful but imperfect world we live in, sensitivity is not a flaw. It’s a form of God-given awareness of the world, of people, of ourselves, and of the wonderful ways that Jesus desires to work in and through us!
This leads us to the main idea for the week:
We can see sensitivity as a gift from God.
Unpack
Read each set of verses out loud as a group, making observations as you go. Afterward, discuss each of the connected questions before moving to the next set of verses.
READ: PSALM 139:13-14
In this passage, the psalmist reflects on how intentionally and carefully God created each person.
- What words or phrases describe how God creates a person in this passage?
- What do you notice about the tone or attitude of the writer toward God?
- What does this passage reveal about how God sees human life?
READ: MARK 6:30-32
In this passage, Jesus recognized the physical demands his disciples are experiencing and invites them to step away from their work and rest.
- What does Jesus notice about his disciples and their physical needs?
- How does Jesus respond to the demands being placed on them?
- What can we learn from Jesus about recognizing and caring for our own physical and sensory needs?
READ: 1 PETER 3:8
In this passage, Peter encourages Christians to develop qualities that reflect the compassion and tenderness of Jesus in their relationships with others.
- What qualities does Peter encourage Christians to demonstrate?
- How might sensitivity help us develop these qualities in our relationships?
- What does this passage suggest about the value of sensitivity in following Jesus?
Action Step
This is where we take what we’ve discussed and put it into practice. Read the action steps below and discuss how you can live them out this week in practical ways.
- Recognize your sensory awareness. Each day this week, notice and thank God for a moment of sensory awareness, whether it’s something pleasant you experience or a physical need you recognize.
- Care for yourself and others. As you pay attention to and care for your own physical needs this week, look for one practical way to help someone else care for themselves.
As you think about these two steps, what might they look like in your everyday life? Which one would you like to focus on this week, and why? Share one practical way you could put it into practice and how the group can encourage or pray for you.
Closing
Sensitivity is not a flaw; It’s a gift! It’s not something to be fixed, but something to be celebrated, nurtured, and shared as a way to honor God and help others experience God’s goodness. So, when you, or a highly sensitive person you love, faces obstacles, feels overwhelmed, or feel like you’re too sensitive, take a moment and be encouraged. You are wonderfully complex and God intends to use that.
Prayer
As we wrap up, we’ll go around and invite anyone to share anything they’d like prayer for together. You can share or pass. Also, below is a Journey of Faith Missionary we can pray for as we close.
