What keeps you grounded when everything around you feels uncertain? Nearly 2,000 years ago, Jude—one of Jesus’ own brothers and an early Christian leader—wrote a short but powerful letter to people navigating confusion, competing voices, and pressure to compromise what they believed. His message is surprisingly relevant today. Join us as we begin Horizon, a three-week series of messages exploring how to develop a faith that stays anchored when life feels unpredictable.

Before we begin, let’s take a quiet moment and pray for God’s direction of our time together. Then we’ll take a couple of minutes to go around and share where we’ve seen God at work in our lives this week. Specifically, how have we applied the Action Steps from last week? As a reminder, they were: 1. Commit to be a brave part of the mission with Journey this year and 2. Make an audacious goal of inviting five people to our Christmas services.
Introduction
Today, we begin a new three-week series called Horizon. When you’re on a journey at sea, the horizon helps you stay oriented and keep your course. The same can be true in our spiritual lives. We’re surrounded by different voices telling us what to believe, what matters, and how we should live. Without realizing it, we can begin to drift.
For the next three weeks, we’ll explore the short New Testament letter of Jude. Jude writes to Christians who were hearing confusing messages about what to believe and how to live. His words can help us stay spiritually oriented, grounded in Jesus, and moving forward in faith.
Connect
Let’s start our discussion time with some “get-to-know-you” questions.
- Are you usually good with directions, or do you depend on GPS?
- When you have a question about something, where do you usually go first for information?
- Do you enjoy hearing lots of different opinions, or do too many opinions make you feel overwhelmed?
Opening
Faith can sometimes feel confusing. Different churches, Christians, podcasts, books, social media voices, and even people we respect may tell us different things about what Christians should believe or how they should live.
Jude reminds us that not every question carries the same weight. There are essential truths about Jesus and the Christian faith that have been handed down through generations. There are also many issues about which faithful Christians can disagree.
Rather than allowing every disagreement or question to throw us off course, we can learn to keep Jesus and the essentials of our faith at the center while walking alongside other people who can help us grow.
This leads us to our Main Idea for the week:
We can find spiritual direction in a confusing world.
Unpack
Read each set of verses out loud as a group, making observations as you go. Afterward, discuss each of the connect questions before moving to the next set of verses.
Read: Jude 1–3 (Jude has one chapter; read verses 1–3.)
In this passage, Jude reminds his readers that they are loved and cared for by God before urging them to hold firmly to the Christian Faith.
- What does Jude remind his readers about their relationship with God before giving them any instructions?
- What do you think Jude means by “the faith that God has entrusted once for all time to his holy people”?
- Why might knowing what is essential to our faith help us when we encounter confusing or competing ideas?
Read: Matthew 7:24–27
In this passage, Jesus compares people who hear and follow his teaching to someone who builds a house on a solid foundation.
- What do the two builders have in common, and what is different about them?
- What eventually reveals the strength of each foundation?
- What does Jesus say makes someone’s spiritual foundation strong?
- Why is it sometimes easier to listen to Jesus’ teaching than to put it into practice?
Read: Ephesians 4:11–16
In this passage, Paul describes Christian maturity as becoming increasingly grounded in Jesus and growing together with other believers.
- What picture does Paul use in verse 14 to describe someone who is spiritually unsettled?
- According to these verses, what helps people grow toward spiritual maturity?
- What role do other Christians play in helping us become more focused and moving in the right direction?
- How does Paul describe the role each person plays in helping the whole body grow?
- Why might we sometimes think of spiritual growth as something we do on our own?
Action Step
This is where we take what we’ve discussed and put it into practice. Read the Action Steps below and discuss how you can live them out this week in practical ways.
1. Let go of something you’ve treated as essential that isn’t.
Think about your own understanding of Christianity. Is there a rule, expectation, or opinion you’ve treated as essential to following Jesus that may not actually belong at the center? What might you need to reconsider or hold more loosely?
Share an example with the group.
2. Practice a shared faith marked by mercy, peace, and love.
Christianity was never intended to be something we figure out entirely by ourselves. Our faith has been passed down through generations and is strengthened as we learn, worship, ask questions, and follow Jesus alongside others. Think of someone in your life who sees faith differently than you do, or may not share your faith at all.
How could you show that person “more and more mercy, peace, and love” this week? Share a practical example with the group.
Closing
There will always be competing voices telling us what to believe and which direction to go. We’ll always have questions or have to reconsider something we were taught. The good news is that we can keep returning to Jesus, the essential truths of our faith, Scripture, and the community of believers God has placed around us.
When the path gets confusing, we can keep our eyes on Jesus, our horizon.
Pray Together
As we wrap up, we’ll invite anyone who would like to share something we can pray for together. You can share or just pass. Also, below is a Journey of Faith Missionary we can pray for as we close.
Missionary Focus
Cody and Lexie
Ministry Description

Memorization Verse
When practiced consistently, memorizing Bible verses can be an important spiritual practice that centers your mind around the truth God has given us.
Jude 1:2
Daily Devotional
Using a practice called the “Discovery Method,” reflect on the verses below. For each passage of Scripture, ask yourself these questions:
- What do these verses reveal about who God is?
- What do these verses reveal about us/others?
- What do these verses invite or inspire you to think, feel, or do?
Day 1: Jude 1–3
Day 2: Psalm 119:9–16
Day 3: Proverbs 3:1–6
Day 4: Matthew 7:24–27
Day 5: Ephesians 4:11–16
